When the bones of an ancient heron were unearthed at a North Florida fossil site, the find wasn't made by researchers but by two Florida Museum of Natural History volunteers. A previously unknown genus and species, the heron has been named Taphophoyx hodgei.
Bedbugs -- some of the most unwanted human bed-mates -- have been parasitic companions with other species aside from humans for more than 100 million years, walking the earth at the same time as dinosaurs.
While volcanic, igneous rock predominates on Mars, virtually the entire Earth fossil record comes from sedimentary rocks. Addressing the problem, Swedish scientists have begun compiling evidence of fossilized microbes in underexplored igneous rock environments on Earth, to help guide where to search for a Martian fossil record -- and what to look for.
Far below Bermuda's pink sand beaches and turquoise tides, geoscientists have discovered the first direct evidence that material from deep within Earth's mantle transition zone -- a layer rich in water, crystals and melted rock -- can percolate to the surface to form volcanoes.
In later years Puzey states it is to support his friend Mr Falcon that he continues shell collecting: “I find shell collecting becoming irksome, so that I have to drive myself to it, but largely for Mr Falcon’s sake I am trying to sustain the interest” #FriendsMW #TomlinArchive
Conchologist H.A. Pilsbry talks warmly of his good friend Hedley in a letter to Tomlin from 1924: “Hedley I call a chunk of pure gold. Very human, very lovable, logical, brilliant as a zoologist a true friend to me” #FriendsMW #TomlinArchive @AmgueddfaVols https://t.co/fhiWuzIpUp
Each year since 1948 we've monitored the activity of a colony of swifts who use the Museum tower as a nesting site.
This year we've spotted 12 swifts around the tower so far - check out our live steam of the nesting site: https://t.co/MuiYGAuEJ1
